8th Graders,
I hope that all of you have checked your grades. Many of you lost credit b/c you have not been keeping up with your weekly on-line Run and Fitness logs. Please get in the habit and keep up to date on them.
Also, I have added a new section below called, "Extra Credit". Please read through it. I just added a new assignment for you.
WEEK AT A GLANCE
Monday- Strength Training
Tuesday- Strength Training
Wednesday- Run Day (see below)
Thursday- Strength Training
Friday- Fitness Day (see below)
WHAT UNIT ARE WE IN?
We are continuing Strength Training this week. Our next unit is going to Jump Rope in the multi-use room. I will be posting handouts for Jump Rope next weekend that will be required on the Monday that we start the unit.
WHAT IS OUR RUN THIS WEEK?
We will be doing our 3rd Testing Run called the Pedometer Run. Some of you have done it the past. The goal is rack up as many steps as possible in 20 minutes. My favorite band is the Dave Matthews Band. Please read this link on my website so you have some background on pedometers.
WHAT FITNESS ACTIVITY ARE WE DOING THIS WEEK?
I am undecided on what exactly we will do for our fitness day (Friday) this week. We will either do a HR/RPE lesson or we will continue our Fitness Testing where you will do a push-up test and pull-up test. By the way, congratulations on completing the ABC workout on Friday. Most of you worked hard and probably felt sore. Great job.
REMINDER: Anybody who missed school Friday or did not participate in the Fitness Workout, you are required to do the Fitness Day Make-Up Assignment. Look on your home page under make up assignments.
DID YOU FILL OUT YOUR E-LOGS?
There is NO RUN LOG REQUIRED for this week. Dave Matthews is from West Virginia. We did not have a run day.
Your e-Fitness Log IS REQUIRED for the ABC Workout in the Gym. It is due by 10/1.
IS HOMEWORK ASSIGNED THIS WEEK?
No, I am giving you a break this week. Nothing is assigned.
ARE THERE ANY ASSIGNMENTS DUE THIS WEEK?
Yes, you have 2 assignments:
1. Complete HW #7 which is an assignment that covers information about starting a Strength Training Program as a beginner.
2. You need to look up your BMI and record it on page 11 in your Sportfolio. The website for the BMI can be found here. Note: If you print out the page that has a graph and information about your BMI, you will receive 5 extra credit points. Just show it to me and then put it behind page 11 in your Sportfolio.
EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS
-Soon, I will be posting several extra credit opportunities on my Extra Credit page on my website, but, in the meantime, there are 2 assignments available to you now.
Extra Credit #1-Print out your BMI page from the website above = 5 points toward your PE 101 grade
Extra Credit #2-Make a Mixed Fitness Music CD = 10 points toward Fitness Grade.
Follow the requirements below:
*Every song has to be middle school appropriate-no swear words and no controversial
content.
*The CD has to have AT LEAST 20 songs
*Music has to be be up-tempo and up-beat (slow songs are not good for pumping people
up while working out). Use songs that you and classmates would have fun working out to.
*Make sure the songs are from different artists
Extra Credit #3- Weight Room Poster (10 points)
As you know, the weight room is officially opening to students to work out at lunch on
Tuesday and Thursday. It would be nice to see the weight room decorated with
"Motivational Posters" with some good words of wisdom on it. A good, but cheasy
example would be "No Pain, No Gain". YOU CAN'T USE THIS ONE. Anyway, you would
take the saying and make a good poster worth hanging in the weight room for all
to see. To get full credit, please follow the parameters below:
Parameters:
1. Use construction paper sizes 12"x18" or 18"x24", any color.
2. Find a motivational saying appropriate to strength training and/or fitness. I bet
a google search will produce a lot of results. I encourage you to even come up
with your own.
3. You can write/draw the the saying or print it out on the computer. Just make sure
it can be seen from pretty far away, you want people working out in the gym to
be able to see it.
4. Decorate the poster with images, colors, etc, but don't make it too distracting and
overly crowded.
5. Put your name, period and roll call on back of poster.
6. Include your sources on the back of the poster as well.
