Week of 5/03/10-5/07/10 (4Q- Week 5)

8th Graders,

Congratulations, you survived your STAR testing (I know, there are still some of you that need to re-take the math portion...good luck). This is going to be another strange week because I will be gone (as all of you know) Monday-Wednesday, back in class on Thursday.

The most important thing to remember is that your COMPLETED FITNESS PLAN PACKET IS DUE ON THURSDAY, MAY 6TH AT ROLL CALL, NO EXCEPTIONS..... I originally said that it would be due on Friday, but, there are several students gone on a Band field trip that I want to collect and talk when all of the students are in class.

WEEK AT A GLANCE

Here is a quick glimpse of the week.
Monday- Frisbee Throw/Catch with Sub
Tuesday- Team Fitness Challenge with Sub
Wednesday- Figure 8 Run with Sub
Thursday- Fitness Plan Packet due and quick rock wall Fit Plan talk
Friday- Ultimate Frisbee Pick teams

WHAT UNIT ARE WE IN?
We will continue with Ultimate Frisbee for the most part this week. Check out the Ultimate Frisbee web page. There are some good Youtube videos of skilled players giving advice on how to grip and throw both the backhand and forehand. For those of you struggling with the forehand throw, the video is very helpful.

WHAT UNIT ARE WE STARTING NEXT?
After Ultimate Frisbee, we will finish the year with golf and the Sickler Golf Classic tournament.

YOUR FITNESS PLAN PROJECT
I am sorry that I have had to change the due date of your packet twice now, but, I completely forgot about being gone at this conference. It has actually benefited you by giving your more time to watch the tutorials and fill out the packet correctly. Here is a quick summary of important information regarding your Fitness Plan:
-Completed Packet is due on Thursday, 5/6 at Roll Call. We will go into the Rock Wall of which I will talk about the next step- tracking your fitness plan for 2 week.
-Although the Proposed Calendar Tutorial says that you will start your fitness plan this Monday, 5/3, you are actually not going to start it until, Monday, 5/10.

There are tutorials that guide you through each page of the packet. Pay particular attention to the Activity Expansion Tutorials and the Proposed Calendar Tutorials (2 areas where students have struggled in the past). These are very helpful. Email me with any questions, I hope to be on email during my 3 days off.

WHAT IS OUR RUN THIS WEEK?
You will be doing the "Figure 8" run which is an easy one to with a sub. To successfully complete this run, you will complete 3 figure 8 laps + 1 bike trail for a total of 1.75 miles. The sub is going to indicate who was unable to complete the run.

WHAT FITNESS ACTIVITY ARE WE DOING THIS WEEK?
Your fitness activity is IDENTICAL to the one that we did on Friday. You will need to complete 2 FULL rotations to pass the fitness workout.

DID YOU FILL OUT YOUR E-LOGS?
e-Run Log: No, you DO NOT need to fill out a log for the Variety Run.

e-Fitness Log: You can fill out the e-Fitness Log for the Outdoor Team Fitness Challenge and earn some extra credit.

IS HOMEWORK ASSIGNED THIS WEEK?
Yes, on Thursday I will explain how to fill out the on-line Fitness Plan tracking logs which will have to be done everyday at home, starting next week. They should only take 5 minutes max to fill out.

ARE THERE ANY ASSIGNMENTS DUE THIS WEEK?
Yes, your Fitness Plan packet is due on Thursday, 5/6.

ARTICLE OF THE WEEK (AOW)
This article discusses why it is important to pack your own lunch as opposed to buying the food offered by the cafeteria. There are some very interesting pieces of advice. By the way, have any of you seen the show, "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution"? This article fits perfectly into the whole food revolution of how and why kids need to eat better. If you want to earn extra credit regarding these AOW, go to the Extra Credit Page and check out the "Little Ones".

There are several to choose from, check out the Extra Credit Page.
